Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Quebec Education Program (QEP)?

The Quebec Education Program (Programme de formation de l'ecole quebecoise, or PFEQ) is the official curriculum framework for all schools in Quebec, Canada. It defines the subjects, competencies, and learning expectations from elementary school through CEGEP. Ariadne maps the Grade 1 through University portion of this program into an interactive visualization.

What subjects does Ariadne cover?

Ariadne covers 19 subjects: Mathematics, Science & Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French, English, History & Social Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, Economics, Computer Science, Ethics & Citizenship, Arts, Physical Education, Geography, Music, Contemporary World, and Financial Literacy. Together, these represent 115 courses and 561 individual topics spanning Grade 1 to University 2.

What grade levels are included?

Ariadne covers Primary Cycle 1, Cycle 2, Cycle 3, Secondary 1 through 5, CEGEP 1, CEGEP 2, University 1, and University 2. Not every subject spans all levels - for example, Science & Technology covers Primary Cycle 1 through Secondary 4, while Mathematics spans the full range from Primary Cycle 1 to University 2.

How do course prerequisites work in the Quebec system?

In Quebec, courses build on each other both within and across subjects. For example, Secondary 4 Science & Technology is a prerequisite for both Secondary 5 Physics and Secondary 5 Chemistry. CEGEP 1 Mathematics (Calculus I) is required for CEGEP Physics, Chemistry, and Economics. Ariadne visualizes all these connections so you can plan your academic path.

What is CEGEP and how does it fit into Quebec education?

CEGEP (College d'enseignement general et professionnel) is a post-secondary institution unique to Quebec. After completing Secondary 5, Quebec students attend CEGEP for two years (pre-university) or three years (technical programs) before university. CEGEP includes mandatory courses in French, English, Philosophy, and Humanities, plus program-specific courses in sciences, social sciences, or arts.

Is Ariadne free to use?

Yes, Ariadne is completely free. It is a public tool built by Inquisitive Flow Learning to help Quebec students, parents, and teachers understand the curriculum and plan academic paths. No account or signup is required.

Is Ariadne available in French?

Yes. Ariadne is fully bilingual (English and French). All subject names, course titles, learning expectations, and topic names are available in both languages. Click the EN/FR toggle to switch at any time.

What is the difference between CST, TS, and SN in Quebec math?

In Secondary 4 and 5, Quebec offers three math pathways: CST (Culture, societe et technique) is the base level, TS (Technico-sciences) is intermediate and geared toward technical fields, and SN (Sciences naturelles) is the most advanced, required for CEGEP science programs. Ariadne maps each stream separately so students can explore their specific pathway.
